In 2011 Canada’s Safest Employer awards were born.
The whole ceremony was created by Occupational Safety Magazine. The awards feature 10 industry specific categories ranging from hospitality to mining.
Companies are judged on a variety of criteria including employee training, OHS management systems, incident investigation practices, emergency preparedness, and innovation.
The awards include Wellness, Psychological Safety, and Young Worker Safety with the main prize being Canada’s Best Health and Safety Culture Award.
Building and Construction
Mining and Natural Resources (includes fish and forestry)
Transportation (land, sea and air)
Chemistry (includes manufacturers, distributors and wholesalers)
Oil and Gas
Public Sector / Non-profit
Services (includes service-dominated businesses, retail, distribution and hospitality)
Utilities and Electrical
They basically have a panel of specialist for each award and you can view that list of people here.
The 2018 awards are now accepting nominations through June 1 so go nominate your favourite safe workplace business or throw your own hat in the ring.
The list of award winners is fairly extensive. In 2017 there were almost 40 winners in both the gold and silver category spanning several industries.
